# Accounts

> The main account and the trading accounts under it, paper and live, the account currency, and the two ways an account can be margined.

## The main account and the trading accounts

Every customer has one **main account**. It holds your cash: deposits land on it and withdrawals
leave from it. It places no orders.

Orders and positions live on a **trading account** linked to the main account. You can open
several, and move money between the main account and any of them with **Move money**. A trading
account is kept in one currency, its **account currency**: margins, fees, swaps and results are
counted and shown in it.

## Paper and live

A **paper** account holds play money against the real prices. You can top it up and reset it,
and nothing in it can be withdrawn or reaches a live account. A **live** account holds real money:
gains and losses are real. The switch between the two is at the top of the screen.

## Equity, margin and margin level

On a trading account the app shows four figures:

| Figure | What it is |
| - | - |
| Balance | The money on the account, with every realised result, commission and swap booked |
| Equity | The balance plus the unrealised result of the open positions |
| Used margin | What the broker holds against the open positions |
| Free margin | Equity less used margin: what is left to open with |

The **margin level** is equity over used margin, as a percentage.

## Two ways to be margined

A trading account is margined in one of two ways, chosen in its margin mode dialog:

* **Per position** (the default, and the only mode of a main account). Each position is held
against its own margin and carries its own liquidation price. One position being liquidated does
  not touch the others.
* **As a whole**. The whole equity of the account backs every position, as at a traditional
broker. No position has a liquidation price of its own: when the account's margin level falls to
the stop-out level, positions are closed one by one, the one losing most first, until the level
  is back above it.

Both are explained on [Liquidation, margin calls and stop-outs](/trading/liquidation).

## Notifications

Fills, margin calls, stop-outs, deposits and security alerts are listed in the app's
notifications, and sent by email and browser push in the language you choose in the settings.
